October Athletes of the Month

By Mark Swope, Student Reporter

Sophia Charles

Nominated by women’s cross country coach Adrienne Thoman, sophomore Sophia Charles has been named the female Athlete of the Month for October.

“Reason for nomination? In one word… DRIVE,” says Coach Thoman. “She sets goals, and understands that gains come when work is put in. It’s been exciting to watch her continue to improve throughout the season!”

When asked where her work ethic and motivation come from, Charles responded, “My work ethic comes from having to work for what I have – growing up doing chores around the house and working from the age of 14 and on. I am paying for my own college degree and it doesn’t come easy, which in turn gives me motivation to do better not only in my school work, but also with athletics and hair. Time is priceless so if I am taking my time to do something I will always give it 110% every time.”

“Sophia is a great team member who always cheers for me when I cross the finish line," says sophomore teammate Heidi Ellis. "Sophia is an amazing friend and she is always there whenever I need her.”

Charles attended Garden Spot High School and is familiar with athletics in that she used to play softball and field hockey. Upon graduation, Charles would like to open her own hair salon. She already has her cosmetology license and currently works at AKS Salon and Day Spa. Outside of work and cross country, Charles enjoys music and being around friends and family.

Zach Morrill

Nominated by men’s soccer coach Doug Fisher, sophomore Zach Morrill has been named the male Athlete of the Month for October. Morrill plays as one of the two forwards for Central Penn.

“He had a hand in almost every goal we scored on our way to a 4-4 record, matching our win total for last year after only 8 games,” says Coach Fisher. “He was elected co-captain by his peers and leads the team in both goals and assists with seven and nine respectively. He is extremely coachable and has never missed one practice or game.”

When asked how he has managed to find so much success game in and game out, Morrill responded, “I am finding so much success this season because I’m trying to stay as relaxed as possible. If I do that then I know I will be successful with anything during the game. Also, the teammates that I play with have helped a ton by just moving the ball the best they can.”

“Somehow, someway Zach always finds himself on the scoresheet, whether it’s a goal or an assist," says  captain Mark Swope. "He’s having an even better season than last, which is obviously great.”

Morrill attended and played soccer at Cumberland Valley High School and played club soccer for Chambersburg. Outside of soccer, Morrill likes to hang out with friends. He majors in Business Administration and finished the summer term with a 3.08 GPA.
